Dirk Matten

Dirk Matten holds the Hewlett-Packard Chair in Corporate Social Responsibility and is a Professor of Strategy at the Schulich School of Business (York University, Toronto). Prof. Matten’s doctoral degree and his Habilitation are from Heinrich-Heine-University Düsseldorf in Germany. Prof. Matten has taught and done research at academic institutions in Argentina, Australia, Belgium, Britain, Canada, the Czech Republic, France, Germany, India, Italy and Turkey.

His 11 books and more than 100 articles have been translated into various languages and have won numerous international awards including the Carolyn Dexter Best International Paper Award of the Academy of Management Conference. His work has appeared in many international journals such as Academy of Management Review, Journal of Management Studies, Organization Studies, British Journal of Management, The Geneva Papers and Human Relations.

Prof. Matten is ranked among the ‘Top 100 CSR Leaders’ globally in an independent poll by the Cambridge based think tank CSR International. In his native Germany, he was recently honoured as the 6th most cited German management writer globally. He is on the editorial board of six journals and his textbook ‘Business Ethics (co-authored with Andrew Crane, Oxford University Press, 2010) is the best selling Business Ethics textbook outside North America.

He is a Visiting Professor at the International Centre for Corporate Social Responsibility (ICCSR) at Nottingham University and at Royal Holloway, University of London. In 2004, was also a Visiting Scholar at the Leonard N. Stern School of Business, New York University.

Prof. Matten enjoys occasionally consulting multinational companies and is on the board of several NGOs. In 2010 he was appointed as ‘Official Summit Blogger’ by the United Nations Global Compact Office (www.craneandmatten.blogspot.com). He has worked more than three years in industry and prior to taking up an academic post in the UK in 1999, was a Senior Consultant with the Frankfurt based consultancy firm Newmark Väth & Partner.
